Procedure Overview
Anatomic reconstruction of the lateral ankle ligaments creates bone tunnels at the anatomic origin and insertion of the ligament (fibula, talus, and calcaneus), then transposes or grafts the tendon along the original ligament course according to predetermined steps.
Graft options include the peroneal tendon, gracilis, Achilles tendon, and allograft tendons.
Fixation methods include suture fixation, suture anchor fixation, suture button fixation, and interference screw compression fixation.
The goal of the surgery is to restore ankle stability without limiting ankle and subtalar joint motion, maintain the integrity of the local anatomy, and preserve the biomechanical environment.
